FIGMENT at the

NEW ISLAND FESTIVAL

(from Figment's website : www.figmentnyc.com )

FIGMENT is an annual arts event on Governors Island, with artwork in every medium, from installation to performance to music to games and many things in between. Participation is open to any artist who would like to share their work. It is a free, non-profit endeavor run by volunteers...As a free, public, non-profit event, we aim to advance social and personal transformation through creativity. FIGMENT is uninterrupted by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. Selling or advertising goods or services is not permitted. Neither our artists nor our planners and staff are paid – everything that you see at FIGMENT is born from a simple desire to share imagination with each other and the public....In these challenging economic times, it is important that artists devise new ways to create, share, think, and dream about what is possible. FIGMENT is an alternative to many of the shortcomings of the commercial art world— exclusive, expensive, impersonal, untouchable and often simply boring.

The CITY OF DREAMS:

This year, we’ve expanded the City of Dreams Mini-golf course to 18 holes, each designed by a different artist or group of artists. The designs are visually stunning and wildly innovative, and designed to be fun – not frustrating – for players of all ages. The course is totally FREE and open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays while Governors Island is open, from FIGMENT on June 12 to October 11, 2009..

In addition to our three-day FIGMENT event and our City of Dreams Mini-golf course, this year we have added 16 large-scale interactive sculpture to the City of Dreams. In the spirit of FIGMENT, these works are participatory, inviting the viewer to think, act and respond. The sculpture garden, located in the City of Dreams area with the miniature golf course, is totally FREE and open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays while Governors Island is open, from FIGMENT on June 12 to October 11, 2009.

Figment at the NEW ISLAND FESTIVAL:

400 years ago, the Dutch arrived on Governors Island. From September 10-20, THEY’RE BACK, for two weeks of mind-blowing theater, music, and art from The Netherlands. All of the island will be the stage for more than 150 artists who will utilize the waterfront promenade, historic homes, barracks, and open green spaces for site-specific performances. And, in a first for Governors Island, the island will be open to the public until midnight for the eight days of the festival!

There is so much happening on Governors Island over the next two weekends! First, the New Island Festival kicks off this Thursday, bringing site-specific theatre from the Netherlands to the island, with a 400-foot long table at the center of the action. Then there’s Pioneers of Change, an exhibition of Dutch Design curated by Droog. Plus there’s the Archeological Dig, an exploration of the island’s history. And the Governors Island Art Fair, curated by 4Heads. See below for full information.
